Residency Program in Pediatric Physical Therapy Requirements

The residency program in pediatric physical therapy includes the following requirements:

Admission requirements

  • Licensed to practice physical therapy in the state of Mississippi prior to beginning the program
  • Current CPR certification
  • Compliance with all UMMC employment requirements

Residency completion requirements

The pediatric physical therapy resident completes the following specific experiences during the program:

  • A minimum of 1,500 hours of clinical practice. Included in the 1,500 hours:
  • A minimum of 150 hours of mentored practice
  • A minimum of 300 hours of planned educational experiences (including rounds, independent study, Journal Club, educational sessions with faculty, etc.)

The pediatric physical therapy resident is required to satisfactorily complete the following during the residency period:

  • Orientation processes for each clinical site
  • APTA clinical skills performance evaluation tools for physical therapists
  • APTA core values
  • Assessments of abilities and skills
  • Skills assessments for clinical examinations
  • Skills assessments for clinical interventions
  • Education/teaching modules for students and/or professional staff (minimum of one module)
  • Patient case reports (minimum of two)
  • Live patient exam (minimum of two)
  • Systematic review of literature on a topic of interest or development and implementation of a research study
  • Presentation at a local, regional or national meeting or conference
  • A written final examination

Application

Applications for the residency are accepted from November through February, prior to the beginning of the residency in August.  Experienced physical therapists and new graduates are encouraged to apply. The residency accepts applications through the centralized application service for residency/fellowship education (RF-PTCAS). Visit RF-PTCAS for specifics on required application materials and to begin the application process.
